Acapulco

Photos Index  Monterrey  Mexico City

The flight from London to Mexico City  is dreadfully long - a full twelve hours. Three hours after
our arrival there we caught another flight to Acapulco.

We arrived at the Camino Real Diamante hotel after midnight local time with lightning flashing
across the sky and the rumble of distant thunder. We woke to heavy rain that that went on for
most of the morning, but through all this it was very warm.

The idea of a pre-christening trip to Acapulco was partly that it'd give us the chance to see
another part of Mexico, but would also be an opportunity to relax together for a few days. Once
the rain cleared away on the first morning the weather was scorching throughout our stay, and
we made the most of the sunshine.

Breakfast was excellent - the hot buffet food pretty much let you put together a 'Full English',
the selection of fresh fruit and fruit juices was extensive and there was even a good range of
black teas. After breakfast we sometimes shared a club sandwich for lunch to keep us going
until 6pm when the 'Open Bar' started'. From then until 8pm all drinks were free, and each
round was accompanied by little savouries and spicy nuts. There were nice cocktails and also a
wide range of surprisingly varied local beers - it's not all bland 'Sol' over there :o)

The hotel was on a small, quiet bay just to the south of Acapulco itself. On our second full day
we booked a four hour tour of the city in a large, air-conditioned taxi that we shared with two
nice Argentinian women who sadly spoke as much English as we could manage Spanish, i.e. not
a lot. Through the help of the taxi driver we found out that they were also planning to go to
Monterrey.

The tour started with a fabulous view down over Acapulco bay from the hills to the south before
we descended into the city and were taken to a jewellery shop - it happens everywhere. We
then went to see the famous cliff divers of La Quebrada, who dive into fierce waters that lash
into the cliffs below them, before ending up at the city's official Handicraft Market for Tourists.
The city was so busy and the weather so incredibly hot that we were glad to retreat back to our
hotel.

After six nights we packed our bags again and flew to Monterrey via Mexico City.
