Two days after the christening Gill
& I travelled on from Monterrey to Mexico City together
with Daniel and Lourdes plus Lourdes' parents. Imelda and Martin looked after Mayela nearly all of the time, which allowed the rest of us to be tourists. On the Tuesday Gill and I plus Daniel and Lourdes went into the centre of the city and visited the huge remains of the Aztec pyramid. On Wednesday we went on an organised tour outside the city to see two major attractions - the shrine of the Lady of Guadalupe (biggest catholic pilgrimage site in the world after St Peter's) and the pyramids of the sun and the moon at Teotihuacan an hour outside the city. Carly and Jo arrived from their travels that evening and the six of us walked into the city centre after dark. We had a Tequila tasting competition in the very bar where revolutionary leader Pancho Villa fired his revolver into the ceiling, then had a leisurely family meal in a very atmospheric restaurant nearby. On the Thursday we walked into the centre again to visit the cathedral and the National Palace where we greatly admired Diego Rivero's extremely political murals depicting Mexico's history. On the Friday- our last full day in Mexico - we went to visit Frida Kahlo's house in Coyoacan, and to round off the holiday we went out in the evening to Plaza Garibaldi and visited a couple of bars for our final Mariachi experience. Then it was the ten hour flight the following day to get back to home and our cats :o) |
